Following on from our last Committee meeting we thought it would be useful to share with you our plans for the coming year. Shaun Clee, our Chair, has pulled together an update below which I am sure you will find useful. And please note Shaun's invite at the bottom to get involved as we'd love to meet everyone and hear all your thoughts about how best we can support our Kids Like Us community going forward.
As some of you will know Kids Like Us has been in existence since 1992 and became a registered charity in 1998.
On August 1st Kids Like Us held our AGM and as such was an opportunity to both reflect on our past and look to our future.
2017-18 has been another successful year in which we have been able to use the funds we raise to support children, young people and their families.
We are committed to making Kids Like Us as relevant and useful as we can and so to this end, a huge focus for this last year has been to further increase contact direct with families through our Outreach initiative, Social gatherings which offer an opportunity for families to not only have contact with other families and share experiences, but to have some fun as well!
We understand that when first diagnosed families have a lot to deal with. Understanding the diagnosis itself, the treatment options available and how best to help yourself or your child. The NHS has some amazing staff and will help enormously with this. However, there is nothing more powerful than talking with someone who has direct experience, who has been in the position your child or young person are at the moment. This is why we feel so lucky to have not only parents on the committee but young adults who have been on that journey themselves. It is also why all of our events have someone from our Committee with direct experience there. We do not set out to be medical experts, but we are experts by experience and are happy to share and answer any questions you may have openly and honestly.
We have lots planned for the year ahead so please do look at our “Upcoming events” page on our website.
At our AGM we agreed to continue our focus on extending our reach so that we can help more individuals and families. The Committee has allocated funds to enable this prioritising our spending on
Supporting independence breaks
A minimum of 4 Outreach initiatives this year
Equipment such as Tens machines
If you would like to help shape the future priorities of Kids Like Us or would simply like to know a bit more then please do come along and have a conversation with us.
